Chapter Seven
Stunned, Boâs gut felt like heâd been punched, hard. His heart ached for Dana, an image of her as a child standing in her backyard, tears streaming down her face froze him in place.
She returned her attention to Buca. âZorro was short-haired like your kitty. Did you know that female all-black cats are very, very rare, but males are common?â
He blinked at her statement. She acted as if she didnât just knock the air out of him with her story. He couldnât stay away from her a moment longer.
It might be an old grief, but he wanted to comfort her. Somehow saying âIâm sorry about your catâ just wasnât enough.
He walked toward her, not sure what he could do, but wanting to offer comfort. Before he reached her, Buca jumped off her lap and rubbed himself across his shins. He lost his balance, and not wanting to step on his cat, he swung his arms wide to catch himself as he hopped over Buca.
He ended up on his knees in the middle of his kitchen floor.
Dana knelt in front of him in a heartbeat. âAre you okay?â Concern mixed with laughter in her eyes.
He smirked, happy to see the sadness gone from her face. âYes. Itâs not the first time heâs done that.â
She smiled that warm smile that wasnât meant for an animal. âIâm sure he has, and yet you and he have both lived to talk about it.â
A quip was on the tip of his tongue about how Buca talked enough as it was, but her expression was so unguarded for a change, he couldnât resist. He pulled her to him and kissed her.
Her arms wrapped around his neck and his whole body relaxed with her acceptance. As their tongues entwined, a new need grew, not between his legs, but in his heart.
Dana moaned as she pressed herself against him, her soft curves accommodating his hard body.
He moved his hand to the back of her head and tilted it so he could better taste her even as he breathed in the scent he remembered from the night before, a light lemony scent that made him think of summer days gone by.
He left her deeply colored lips for her enticing neck and shoulder.
Her hand grasped his ass hard and his groin responded. He pressed his erection against her belly. âDana.â He spoke against her skin, his hunger for her growing.
She let go of his neck and pushed away from him, sitting on her butt on the floor. Her breaths were quick, her hazel eyes dark, but she shook her head. âIâm not sure this is a good idea.â
âWhy?â He wasnât sure if it was a bruised ego on his part or her skittishness that irritated him, but this time he would get an explanation.
She didnât look at him. Instead, she pulled her legs underneath her. âBecause once the arsonist is caught, youâll move on, and I donât want to get involved with someone who isnât going to hang around.â She lifted her head and looked at him.
